Engine Reinstall

The process of reinstalling that same 485 lb marine engine in a
P35 can be quite satisfying. Pictures are clickable.

The Trip Back

Tested and ready to be reinstalled.

25 Years of Oil & Dirt

This area required major cleaning. Notice I supported the shaft while the engine was out.

Below the Fuel Tank

I painted the bildge area below the fuel tank as well as the rest of the bilge. It really made the engine compartment look clean and light. When I shine a light down there now it makes things easy to see. Not that I'm really looking for any surprises down there.

Engine Compartment

What a difference between the old and the new. Notice the plank supporting the galley counter.

Walking the Engine In

Going back in was eaiser then coming out. Caution in working in and around that center board tube. I would hate to think how breaking that loose could affect my day.

Positioned

Time for the motor mounts. I found short lengths of "two by fours," very helpful in moving the engine while on the mounting platform.

All Configured

I connected all the DC wiring, meters battery cable, shaft, exhaust, hoses and motor mounts. As can be seen in the picture, I didn't install the fuel tank so I used a fuel can to supply the diesal. The fuel tank will be installed after alignment of the shaft.

Engine Mount

Patiance and working from side to side helped to get the motor mounts in.

Engine Mounts

Notice the tilt off vertical for the mounting bracket. I had to go from side to side and level this out. It finally came up straight.

Engine Mounts

The only issue I'm not happy with is the right rear motor mount. It just touches the mounting platform. I'm sure this transferres a slight about of vibration to the boat. On the list for another day....

Engine from the Rear

So now you see why I didn't put the fuel tank back in. With the tank in the middle it would make for a bad day in reaching all those connections. More on this in the Engine Alignment section.

Engine Exhaust

Good view of the new engine exhaust pipes. The water line is about two inches below the exhaust exit from the engine. Notice how high the piping rises above the water line.

Fuel Tank In

This picture was taken after the shaft/transmission alignment and installing the dripless stuffing box. Nice new hoses.

Left Side of Engine

I insulated the engine compartment with sound/temperature proof insulation. Notice how close the center board tube is to the alternator housing. I have since shortened the fan belt to correct this.

Right Side of Engine

The fuel filter can be seen mounted to the engine wall. I plan to install a small lamp in the rear behind the fuel filter bowl. When switched on you can see if any water is mixed with diesel fuel. The fresh water filter and plumbing is to the right.

Finished Install

Back in business with the cabinet front installed.
