Joe Shows us how to take care of water entering the chain locker (Nov 08)
As part of my restoration on WINDSTAR, I am trying to find the leaks that contribute to bilge water.
Most of them are associated with deck fittings or genoatrack bolts. However, I found the hawsepipes for the anchor chains were taking quite o bit of rain water off the foredeck which then went down through the chain locker to the bilge.
Some of your readers might be interested in my solution, as a Minnie project.
I used StarboardŽ, which is about 1/2 inch thick and cut pieces to serve as pedestals for my deck pipe covers. A double thickness was achieved by epoxying two pieces together. This will raise the hawse pipe opening an inch above the deck. Since I have dual anchors with a divided chain locker, I needed 4 pieces for 2 pairs. After these were epoxyed together and shaped on a sanding table, I drilled a 2 inch hole through the center of each for the anchor chain to run through. The next step was to coat the pedestals with epoxy and add paint.
The foredeck was then marked for the placement of the pedestals and they were epoxyed in place. Be sure to thread the chain through the pedestal.
The pedestals and foredeck got another coat of paint and the deck pipe covers were reinstalled.
Rain water or anchor wash down water no longer goes into the bilge through the chain locker.
Cheers,
Joe
