Painting the Deck Nov 2008

(The Deck was painted during the same time period as the Hull and the Teak)

Step 1 - A good degreasing wash of the whole deck comes first

(I used "Purple Wash" & green scrub pads)

The anchor well was full of old chain rust and mud

See Anchor Chain Painting

The bow deck washed.  I'll do the hatch cover off of the boat

If it just looked that good finished as it does clean & wet

Step 2 - Deck sanding with 120-grit sandpaper both hand & orbital

(I sanded both the skid and non-skid at the same time)

I removed most of the easy to remove hardware

Sanding the deck with an orbital 120 grid sandpaper

Sanding the non skid area and the skid area at the same time

The cockpit area was a real challenge

I succeeded in trashing the work area

Hole patching for some old hardware attachments

Details...

Removed the hatch covers and will work these off line

Final wash job just before the 333 wipe down

Step 3 - Deck wipe down and taping

While waiting for the first coat to dry on the hull I stared wiping down the deck

If not wiped down the stuff on the rag would be reflected in the deck paint

Tapping takes a lot time.  The rewards are a straight fine line of paint.

Step 4 - First coat of Interlux© OFF WHITE goes on the smooth sections

Interlux Off White, working from 1 qt, temp 71°- 80°, after just putting on the second hull coat

The OFF WHITE had just enough gloss

I had a few runs that I'll take care of with a light sanding and put on another coat

Love those throw-a-way brushes.  This Brightside went on very well and smoothed out nicely

I finished up all the solid OFF WHITE for the deck.  It took 1 qt to cover everything except the hatch covers.  So plan on a 2 qt job.  I pulled all the paint tape off after three hours.  It took me a good 2 hours to tape everything on the deck that I didn't remove and a good 1/2 hour to remove that same tape.

Step 5  First coat of Interlux© BRISTOL BEIGE goes on the Non-Skid

Taping the bow deck area and putting the first coat on the non-skid

Not sure yet how I will get paint below the teak here.(See Below)

Removed the main hatch slide strips and painted them off white also.

Five rolls of tape and counting

Check that edge out

Front deck finished.

Bow and mid section deck complete except for the teak

Step 6 - Work on the hatch covers

Sanding - Wipe down with 333 - Taping off for the non-skid - paining and taping off the Off-White.  Tape comes off at a 45° to the painted surface

Finished and ready for new hardware

When I removed the H/W I separated it in bags

Step 7 - Deck Painting Finished!

Cockpit taped and painted.  Took 2hrs.

Two days of drying and the tape comes off.  Love that shine

Finishing off the anchor locker with Off-White

Turned out that the "flat pad" from Lowes, with wires on the sides was just the thing for painting under the anchor platform.

I found some marine paint at Lowes, much cheaper that Interlux for doing the inside of the hatches.  Match the Off White very well.

Six rolls of tape at the other end of the job

Lessons Learned

1- Do the solid areas first (non-slip)

2- Taping took a good 2 hours to do the complete bow and mid deck areas.  I did not remove hand rails, stanchions, and mast hardware.  Taping for the cockpit and stern took 2 hrs.  Took 6 rolls of tape.  Use only the 3M good stuff tape.  The green tape (Wal-Mart Automotive) gave me problems in the sun.

3-The hatch covers are a good place to practice painting and try different colors for matching

4-Did not need to add additional non-slip grit.  Painting over the original was good enough

5-Have only one wet edge working at a time

6-Brush from new paint into the old paint

7-I brushed (3") painted everything.  Much better control of the paint for me.  I did use a foam brush on some parts.
