Engine Shaft, Coupling and PYI

(The shaft work was accomplished during the same time period as the Deck, Hull and Teak painting at the

haul of 2008.  Location is Melbourne Florida, with work at night on the engine and shaft.

For those that have had the pleasure of working down in this area, these pictures

should bring back man bad memories.  This is the worst place to work in the whole boat.

Prop & Shaft

This is the work area around the engine shaft.  No way (on this boat) that anyone could work on the shaft with the fuel tank in place.  Just pull it out and save a year on your life.

Loosing the coupler bolts to the transmission.  Two handed operation for sure.  Didn't drop any hardware...Ok, one stupid washer...OK!

This the "play" distance that I have to work with when the prop, shaft and coupling are loose.

After "gently" tapping the coupling with a hammer I was able to pull the pin out.  This enable the coupler to slide forward without binding

Time for PB-Blaster

After 10 min it was off

Loosing the clamps around the shaft tube of the PYI shaft baffle.

The PYI shaft ring has two sets of "set-screws" to be removed.  The inter screw against the shaft and an outer one to make sure the inter screw one didn't move.

Once loose it slid forward.  The fit is really close and the shaft needed to be cleaned in order for it to slide freely.

I sanding the end of the shaft in order slide the PYI ring over the end

The PYI ring will need some lube in order not to damage the o-rings on the inside diameter of the ring

In order to get the prop off it was necessary to slide the shaft all the way forward into the transmission ring (1/2")

With the inside shaft free and able to slide fully forward it's now possible to pull the prop off.  Your right, one should not have to do any work inside with the shaft in order to remove the prop.  I agree.
